I designed a book cover.
I was honoured to be asked to come up with a cover design for David Cleevely’s book, Serendipity: It Doesn’t Happen By Accident.
I designed a few options. Looking back, I some of them were slightly crazy, so I’m pleased David picked the one that actually made sense and was aesthetically pleasing. I wrote a few words about the cover (featured in the book):
I’d love to say that being asked to design an image for David’s book was a true moment of Serendipity, and for about 10 seconds it did feel like it, but in truth there was a path both David and I took that meant it was almost inevitable. I won’t bore you with the threads that combine to tell the story. What I will tell you is I have always been a fan of outsider art – art that rejects formal training and conventional artistic practices. Although Jackson Pollock wasn’t an outsider artist, his work had many aligning characteristics, full of energy and apparent chaos. But of course, those paint splatters were full of intent. I wanted to reflect the idea that what appears accidental is often the result of unseen thought and purpose. Like the book’s message, the design embodies controlled serendipity: a balance of spontaneity and structure that leads to something meaningful.
And here’s the book.
